What is Battlefield Interpretation?
One of the first questions often asked is why we study “Battlefield interpretation”. Isn’t it the same as military history? In reality the two cannot be more different. With military history, especially where it pertains to battles, most research and interpretation is done by viewing the action on essentially a flat plane. We read reports, we look at positions, we research the events which lead up to the action, and finally we look at the aftermath. The question we often fail to answer is why fight there and how. This publication discusses this question and more.
