Understanding Civil War Muster Records

The purpose of this document is to provide insight into how these records were initially compiled, how they were prepared for analysis by researchers, and to help genealogists better understand them.

Genealogists are generally far more interested in their family history than the perceived vagaries of how a particular state’s Adjutant General or the War Department handled the paper work for their ancestors.  This is perfectly understandable and expected, but there is a level of understanding of these records that is lost without some understanding of the mundane process of records collection, compilation, and presentation.
